Dr. Steve’s Holiday Gifts for a Healthy Home

December 16th, 2020

It’s the most wonderful time of the year again, and that means you may be looking for ideas for gifts for your loved ones. Well you’re in luck, because I have a short list of a few items that may fit the bill.

Since many of us have been spending more of our time at home this year, perhaps a home good that brings more health into their space might be perfect! Here, in no particular order are a few ideas.

The Phillips SmartSleep Wake-up Light – This specialized alarm clock uses light and soothing sounds to ease you into the day. These types of alarm clocks have been praised by physicians for increasing energy and improving mood by helping you achieve a more natural sleep/wake cycle.

The Verilux HappyLight – Speaking of using light to help improve your health, this device helps people who suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder. By emitting light that is in the wavelength of typical daylight, this handy gadget can help make up for the hours of lost light that can lead to increased incidence of depression in some folks.

Honeywell Cool Mist Humidifier – I’m not sure if you have noticed or not, but it gets pretty dry here in Colorado, even more during winter it seems. A small humidifier like this one is a great option for easily boosting the humidity in your home. Increased humidity has positive effects on our respiratory tract, which in turn improves the quality of our breathing. As a bonus it can also help improve skin dryness which is especially troublesome this year with all the hand washing…

Winix Air Purifier – Things also get a bit dusty in these parts as well, and all that particulate matter can get into your lungs, irritate your body, and ruin your day. An air purifier is a great tool for improving the quality of the air you are breathing while you’re sitting through your fifth Zoom meeting of the day. This particular unit is the one I have in my own home and have been very happy with it.

SNOOZ White Noise Machine – Sleep is one of the most critical factors to maintaining good health. If you or the person on your list wake frequently due to noise, or have trouble falling asleep because of it, this little guy is there to help. The neat thing about this one is that it doesn’t contain any looping tracks of noise, but uses a small fan instead to create a soft hum to fall asleep to. The tone can be adjusted easily, and it also has an app with additional features.

FLEXISPOT Height Adjustable Desk – If your/your giftee’s work from home situation is looking a bit more indefinite, you might look into getting into an adjustable desk. These things really should be standard equipment in any office to help stave off back and neck pain that comes from working at a desk all day. They really seem to be coming down in price as well, which is a definite plus. It also appears that this company will let you purchase it with FSA/HSA dollars if you have a prescription, which I am happy to provide to my patients!

Aquasana 3-Stage Water Filter – Face it, we should all probably be drinking more water throughout the day, and the water you drink should be as pure and free of contaminants as possible. This system mounts under your sink and filters out a whole host of things that can affect your health such as heavy metals, excessive chemicals, and even some bacteria!

The best thing about all of these gifts is that they should help improve the lives of those you love all year long. I hope they gave you some ideas and lead you or those you gift into a healthier and happier 2021.

Happy Holidays.
